Much of what we throw out daily is food for soil.
Two kinds of material
- Green (wet): vegetable peels, tea leaves, cut grass.
- Brown (dry): dry leaves, paper, straw, sawdust.
Keep browns somewhat higher (about 2 parts brown to 1 part green by volume).
Steps
- Start with a dry layer in a drum with holes, or a pit.
- Add green material and a little soil.
- Keep as moist as a wrung-out sponge.
- Turn once a week.
- In 2–3 months you get dark, earthy compost.
Avoid fish, meat and oily food — they smell and attract pests.
