Five ingredients
Greens (nitrogen), browns (carbon), water, air and living organisms.
Two-bin method
- Build two bins side by side from bamboo, mesh or brick.
- Layer coarse twigs, then ~15 cm of organic waste, a thin layer of manure and a little soil.
- Turn into the neighbouring bin after 2–3 weeks, and again 3 weeks later.
- Where space allows, a pile about 1 m wide holds heat well.
Banana circle
Plant bananas in a ring and compost in the middle — the plants feed themselves. It suits Bangladesh’s humid climate beautifully.
Keep bones, fat, meat and diseased plants out of the pile.
