Choosing your site: where to put garden and home

Flood level, water, sun and slope — what to check before you commit to a spot.

A good site makes half the work easy. Think in small steps rather than doing everything at once.

What to check

  • Flooding and waterlogging: where water rises or stands in the monsoon — ask neighbours.
  • Water source: tubewell, pond or rain — which is closest.
  • Sun: keep the vegetable garden open and south-facing.
  • Slope: a gentle fall drains water; avoid low corners for vegetables.
  • Near the kitchen: gardens close to the house get more care.
Sketch your plot on paper: garden, compost, water tank and poultry house.
